How long have you been drawing? When I was four years old I was already drawing steam boats on the new living room chairs. I always enjoyed drawing but I don't think I drew more than other children. When did you realize that you wanted to become an illustrator? When I was 20 years old. Have you studied formally? What? LOI courses in illustration. And I read all sorts of books about drawing, art, design etc. Also I make drawing- and idea books in which I do a lot of sketching. Every so often I evaluate my ideas and development. I have now started with book number 29. Who are your clients and how did they find you? I get most of my work by word of mouth and through my website. How do you start a job and where do you seek inspiration? I talk things through in detail with the client to learn exactly what he or she wants. Then I make a number of rough sketches. As soon as I have final approval, I make the final artwork. I am inspired by all sorts of things, usually an idea manifests itself spontaneously in my head. |
![]() In what media do you prefer to work? Pen and ink and the computer (Photoshop, illustrator) When is a drawing finished? When I have finished the final artwork and both myself and the client are satisfied. What work have you been most satisfied with? At this moment I am most satisfied with the web site I made: www.tinker-bell.nl. Generally speaking I am not completely satisfied with anything, but if I am, it is usually the last thing that I have made. What kind of project would you still like to tackle? Illustrations for educational material, children's books, great web sites and much more. |

| sources of inspiration: I get inspired by many things, too many to name. For example, Escher inspired me to start drawing seriously. I love Michael Sowa's nicely painted humor, Lorenzo Mattoti for his use of color and strange stories and Francois Chalet for his simple humor. 1] Escher 2] Sowa 3] Mattotti 4] Chalet portrait: selfportrait |
